Both Maui Interscholastic League girls volleyball champions lost in the quarterfinals of the New City Nissan/HHSAA state tournaments on Thursday.
Baldwin, seeded third in the Division I tournament, was swept by Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up Kamehameha Kapalama 25-9, 25-15, 25-16 at the McKinley gym in Honolulu.
MIL Division II champion Seabury Hall, also seeded third, lost to Le Jardin 25-17, 25-13, 21-25, 25-12 at Waipahu.
The Bears were led by freshman setter Lilinoe Paschoal, who dished out 17 assists to go along with two digs, two kills and an ace to earn OC-16 Impact Player of the Game honors.
Faith Alvior had a team-high eight kills and one block for Baldwin. Ariana Naipo had six kills and four digs, Amanda Naipo had four kills and three digs, and Kaysha Tanaka had six digs and an assist.
The Bears play a fifth-place semifinal today at 6:30 p.m. against Hilo.
“We got 5th place in our sights,” Baldwin coach Al Paschoal texted to The Maui News.
Nadia Koanui had 12 kills to lead Kamehameha, which advanced to play No. 2 Kahuku in the semifinals today.
The Spartans will play in a D-II fifth-place semifinal today at 6:30 p.m. against Waimea at Waipahu.
MIL runner-up Molokai advanced to the Division II consolation final with a 25-21, 18-25, 15-13 win over Leilehua. The Farmers will face Konawaena today at 3:30 p.m. at Waipahu.
Statistics from the D-II matches were not reported.
